Troubleshooting: "Purelymail is not configured to accept mail for this domain"

If you receive an automated bounce-back message stating that "Purelymail is not configured to accept mail for this domain," it typically means there is a mismatch between your DNS settings and your routing configuration.

This error occurs when your domain’s MX records point to Purelymail, but your "Deliver mail to" setting is set to External MX. In this mode, our servers are instructed to reject incoming mail because they expect an outside service to handle it.

Understanding Delivery Modes

Purelymail offers three ways to handle your domain's traffic:

  • Purelymail: We host your mailboxes and store your emails on our servers.

  • Relay: We receive the mail and immediately pass it on to a different server you specify.

  • External MX: You use a different email provider for incoming mail.

    • Note: This mode is primarily used if you only want to use Purelymail for sending mail while receiving it elsewhere.

How to Fix This Error

If you want your email to be hosted and stored by Purelymail, follow these steps to update your settings:

  1. Log in to the Purelymail Account Admin portal.

  2. Navigate to Domains.

  3. Click on the Domain Name experiencing the error.

  4. Locate the "Deliver Mail To" dropdown menu.

  5. Change the setting from External MX to Purelymail.

  6. Click the Save button at the top of the screen.

These changes take effect immediately. Once saved, you can send a test email to confirm that messages are successfully arriving in your Purelymail inbox or Webmail.
